I read this book through but really think it would be best used reading with other people to discuss and delve deeper into certain parts.

This is a very informative and chocked full of thoughts/ideas/and scripture. ( | Paperback Format) (Also available in Nook Format) Reviewer: Erin Slocum / My Thoughts on The Portrait of A Christian: This is a wonderful book to read through! I appreciated his thoughts on being a church of action, but not using those actions as a way to puff us up, but to draw us closer to God.

I love how it delves into the Scriptures and really gets the reader to thinking about how to improve your walk of faith. This book is an excellent one on the Christian walk! I really appreciated that Raymond shares the pitfalls that come with pride and how that is a constant battle we need to be working on. So if you want a book that will challenge you to deepen your relationship and walk with God, check out this book for yourself. Rather than feeling “preachy”, this book read as a love letter about how God has worked in his life. As the book demonstrates in order to recognize Jesus we have to know the Scriptures of the Bible. Perhaps because my husband is an ordained minister, I felt a connection to this book. This book provides an intimate look at Minister Raymond D. I too want to know Christ Jesus and the God who sent Him. The Portrait of a Christian is a book that caught my attention, especially after reading that the author wanted to know Christ Jesus and the God who sent Him. Read the book from cover-to-cover, i.e., do not jump around.

Important: To get the most out of, The Portrait of a Christian, Revelation 1:3: "Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy,Īnd heed the things which are written in it for the time is near." (NASB) The book I wrote, The Portrait of a Christian, is to help the professing Christian not to be one of those who just say “Lord, Lord.” Are you willing to take a second look at your Christianity? If so, then The Portrait of a Christian was written for you.

Not everyone who says to Me Lord, Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven.’ Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’” (NASB) So then, you will know them by their fruits. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor figs from thistles, are they? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. There are several warnings given to the professing Christian in God’s Word to me, the most terrifying warning to the professing Christian for this time we’re living in is what Jesus said in Matthew 7:15–23: “‘Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. All of us must earnestly contend for the faith!Ĭomment: Do you believe we’re approaching the Last Days? Are you seeing the season change-beginning to see leaves fall to the ground? Yes! Then, The Portrait of a Christian, is a must read for you. He wanted to paint a portrait of God's heart through thirty-one separate commentaries-starting with the importance God placed on His Gospel and ending with a Lost Love. Raymond wrote The Portrait of a Christian, to challenge and provoke thought to those who desire a closer relationship with Christ. To know anyone's heart, you must listen to their words. Sopp studied the Scriptures, not to parrot God's Word through memorization, but just to know God's heart as He communicated through His Word. Are you willing to take a second look, to lay down your life? The Portrait of a Christian was written to help you do so.įor more than thirty-eight years, Minister Raymond D. It takes a courageous person to take a second look-to lay down their life-just as the apostle Paul. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish in order that I may gain Christ." (NASB) The apostle Paul, with great knowledge of Scripture, said in Philippians 3:7–8: "But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 2 Chronicles 7:14: "And My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray, and seek My faceĪnd turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." (NASB)
